Well, it has been nearly 18 months since our last post. What better day to update My Life with Lola than on Mother’s Day, 2012.
Last year was a rough one for Lola and me. Mommy had both her knees replaced within six months of each other. During the first procedure in January 2011, Lola had to stay with someone while I was in rehab. She visited me once in the facility, but was pretty freaked out by the wheel chair. When she came home to me, I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to take care of her — we certainly could not go for long walks.
But, that was also the year of a huge snow storm. My nephew and his friend, with the help of my wonderful sister-in-law, came over and shoveled out, what Conor called, Lola’s pee labyrinth, in my backyard. I was able to just open the back door and Lola ran out an did her business quite well.
It’s been a long road to recovery, and my little pal has been at my side each step of the way. The second procedure was six months later, in June of last year. I chose a different surgeon and a less invasive procedure that avoided the rehab circuit and any extended separation from my girl.
Today? Lola is nearly 4 years old (this August), and she is still ruling the roost around here. Even after all week in daycare, several trips to the dog park, her energy is unbounded. I am grateful for this since she makes me get off my a$$ and walk her regularly. And the good news is — I can do it thanks to my new knees!
She still terrorizes the other, bigger dogs at daycare and tortures her boyfriend, Ace, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. But even Ace has rallied and periodically gives her back a taste of her own medicine. Although she did get a time-out one day for bad behavior.
Lola’s favorite pastime is basking in the sun and this is what we aim to do very soon today to celebrate Mother’s Day.
